Introduction

Friday, April 30 2010 : Install Ubuntu 10.04 on my New PC that just bought last Sunday. Have to type in English as Thai in this PC is not yet set up. User interface looking good

Installation

  • Install on first boot drive from CD very smooth
  • Boot Ubuntu in 17-27 Seconds
    • Bios ->Grub = 28 seconds
    • Bios ->Login = 45, 55 seconds
    • Grub ->Login = 17, 27 seconds
    • Shutdown 10 seconds
  • CPU consumption เวลาดูหนัง Online เมื่อก่อน Firefox จะกิน CPU 100 % กว่า แต่ในเครื่องใหม่นี้ Firefox กิน CPU ราวๆ 40 % เท่านั้นเอง

Status after installed

Work right after Ubuntu installation

  • Sound and Microphone work right after installation but both volume is very low , you need to increase the volume by System>Preference>Sound
  • Display OK
  • Web Cam Logitech ใช้กับ Skype ได้ทันที
  • Screen Zoom
  • Internet connection can be used right after installation
  • ภาษาไทยจัดลำดับได้ดีใน Wiki editor
  • CPU load และ RAM load ไม่ถึง 20 % โดยเปิด Firefox 2 Windows, 40 % เวลาดูหนัง online สุดยอดความแรง
  • ระหว่าง Download เปิดเว็บได้ปกติดีทุกอย่าง Multi-tasks
  • Grub Boot loader working fine

After Ubuntu installation

Dual Screen Setup

  • Install Nvidia Driver System>Administration>Hardware Drivers
  • Boot to let system recognize new driver
  • Run "sudo nvidia-settings" in terminal and config Nvidia dual monitor

Firefox

  • Install flash player by select Youtube.com then click install flash player
  • add on for firefox to zoom NoSquit 2.0.3 เพื่อให้จำ Zoom Level ของแต่ละ Web site
  • Restore Bookmarks เก่า ปกติก่อนย้ายเครื่องควร Export Bookmarks ไว้เพื่อนำมา import จะได้ไม่เสียเวลา Set Bookmarks ใหม่
  • ติดตั้ง NoSquint สำหรับ Zoom Level สำหรับเว็บแต่ละตัว
  • Change Google Search from .com to .co.th
    • Or you can go to

/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.16/searchplugins

and edit the file google.xml. Simply replace every .com with a .co.th and everything will work fine. Don't forget that you need root privileges to edit this file so use Code:

gksudo nautilus

แต่แก้แล้วก็จะกลับมาใหม่ทุกครั้งที่มี Updated

Thai language

Software installation

  • Skype
  • aMSN : and set autostart System>Preferences>Startup Applications
  • Cheese for Web Cam viewer
  • Install Virtual box from Ubuntu Software center
    • Able to install other OS with web access, Speaker
    • Memory use 50 % CPU less than 20 %
    • Setup Share Folder แต่ไม่สำเร็จ บางแห่งแนะนำให้ใช้ SAMBA แต่ไม่อยากยุ่งยากเพราะสามารถ Share ทาง Internet ได้อยู่แล้ว
  • LuckyBackup เป็นโปรแกรมที่ใช้ Backup Data แบบ Synchronize ไว้ใน USB Drive และ Config ให้ Backup เรียบร้อย
  • Installed VLC Media Player
  • ติดตั้ง Workrave เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้ใช้คอมต่อเนื่องนานเกินไปเพราะผมเป็น RSI อยู่
  • ติดตั้ง Freemind ดีใจได้ Version ใหม่เหมือนใน Windows แล้ว

Tweak Ubuntu

หากคุณเป็นคนชอบแต่งรถ คงจะเข้าใจผมว่าผมก็ชอบแต่งคอมพิวเตอร์ของผมให้ดูดีกว่า ทำงานได้สะดวกกว่า มีระบบอัตโนมัติต่างๆที่ช่วยอำนวยความสะดวก ดีกว่าคอมพิวเตอร์ของคนอื่นๆ แต่แต่งคอมพิวเตอร์ไม่เสียเงินแต่เสียเวลาครับ บางที่แทบไม่ได้ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เพราะเอาเวลาไปแต่งคอมพิวเตอร์หมด

  • ติดตั้ง Ubuntu Tweak ไว้ปรับแต่งระบบให้ถูกใจ
  • ให้จำ Sessions ก่อน Shutdown

สำหรับ V. 10.04 อยู่ที่ System>Preferences>Startup Applications เลือก Tab "Options" Check "Automatically remember running application when logging out" 

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
  • Start up programs in specific workspace คือการกำหนดให้โปรแกรมที่เปิดโดยอัตโนมัติอยู่ใน Workspace ที่กำหนด จะได้ไม่ต้องเสียเวลาย้ายหรือจัด Workspace
  • ป้องกันการทำงานหักโหม เพราะผมเป็น RSI: repetitive stress injury, repetitive strain injury อยู่จึงต้อง Brake ตัวเองไว้บ้าง
  • Install gEdit Plugin sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins

Web Server Development Environment

  • Install LAMP as this link
    • If PHPMyAdmin don't work solved as below
    • The phpmyadmin configuration file is located at: /etc/phpmyadmin folder.

To set up under Apache all you need to do is include the following line in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: 

Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf

Now restart Apache: 

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Point your browser to: http://domain/phpmyadmin

  • Change default web directory
    • As default web directory is var/www which need root access then I change it to home/jk/www by
      • edit file name "default" in /etc/apache2/sites-available replace all var/www with home/jk/www
      • Then restart Apache server with sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
  • Install Netbeans Web IDE from Ubuntu Software Center
    • Insall PHP addin
  • Install FileZilla FTP and Setup connection to Hosting Lotus

Restore Data

  • ใช้ Lucky Backup backup Data เก็บไว้ก่อนขึ้นเครื่องใหม่ ก็ถึงเวลาขนข้อมูลขึ้นเครื่องใหม่
    • Data จาก Folder ต่างๆ
    • Bookmarks ของ Firefox
    • MySQL Database Dumps เอาไว้ เวลา Export เก็บไว้ควรแยกเป็น Database จะดีที่สุดครับ

Error found

  • Friday, May 21 2010 no trash bin on desk top
    • Panel encountered a problem with loading AFIID:GNOME_TrashApplet
    • Result by reboot
  • Saturday, May 22 2010 Localhost don't work
    • Result by restart apache with command line jk@Ubuntu:/$ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
  • Saturday, June 05 2010 cannot access panel and application menu
